Message from the Dean

Welcome to our chapter website! Our chapter serves organists, choir directors, and organ enthusiasts in Kalamazoo, Portage, Battle Creek, Marshall, Coldwater, Schoolcraft, Centreville, Three Rivers, Sturgis, St. Joseph, Berrien Springs, South Haven, Paw Paw, Mattawan, and Richland.

Please also note that our chapter will host the 2013 Region V Convention of the AGO right here in Kalamazoo! Our Mission Statement is as follows: "The mission of the Southwest Michigan Chapter of the American Guild of Organists in hosting a regional convention shall be to honor the goals of the national AGO and its philosophic statement on regional conventions. We want to share our pleasure in and devotion to our profession with colleagues, students, and the public at large. The intended outcome is inspiration, renewal, education, fellowship, challenge, and an opportunity to showcase the AGO. To achieve these goals, we invoke our motto, 'Soli Deo Gloria.'"

We are also proud to include the Twin Cities Organ Concert Series of St. Joseph and Berrien Springs as our organization's younger partner, now celebrating their 10th year. Look further down our site for events and announcements.

From Dean Mark Wells:
Those in attendance at the May 6 student recital presented by our chapter at St. Luke's Episcopal, Kalamazoo, were treated to an evening of some exceptionally fine playing. It is very encouraging to see and hear the next generation of organists as they gain the skills and confidence needed for their future challenges. The program included four college and three high school students all of whom are members of our chapter. The quality of playing I have been hearing -- like at this recital and during last summer's national convention -- gives me great confidence in the future of our profession. Rumors of the demise of the organ are greatly exaggerated!

If you have not renewed [or joined] your AGO membership, now is the time to do so. Our chapter is a vigorous (and growing) organization, and we want to be sure YOU continue to be part of our excellent monthly programs and the support of your colleagues during 2013-14. Plus, you will not want to miss out on a single issue of our excellent magazine, The American Organist.

When he reminded me it was time to write my monthly paragraphs, Carl Doubleday mentioned that we have only 37 days until our long-awaited regional convention begins. That number of days is even smaller now, and we rejoice that so many of you have registered to attend the entire convention. I hope to have the opportunity to greet many of you personally. Soli Deo Gloria.
