Message from the Dean |
| Greetings from the Salisbury chapter. As the only chapter on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, our membership includes musicians from a large geographic area. We meet for dinner and programs five times per year, and also sponsor many special projects including members’ recitals, organ restorations, youth choral festivals and hurricane relief.
Although we are a small chapter, we were recognized nationally for the largest increase in membership in our category in 2005-2006. This is a great place to live, work and make music! Join us, or let us know when you can visit. Susan Zimmer, Dean (410) 543-4835, ssz749@yahoo.com |

JOHN AND MARIANNE WEAVER John Weaver’s musical studies began at age six at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, from which he received that school’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 1989. A student of Alexander McCurdy and Robert Baker, he received the Diploma of the Curtis Institute, a Master of Sacred Music degree from Union Theological Seminary, and Honorary Doctor of Music degrees from Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pa., and the Curtis Institute of Music. In 2005 he was named “International Performer of the Year” by the New York City Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. Dr. Weaver was Director of Music at Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York City from 1970 to 2005. He has also been head of the Organ Department at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, chair of the Organ Department at the Juilliard School, and served on the faculties of Westminster Choir College, Union Theological Seminary, and the Manhattan School of Music. For eleven years he was at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in New York City where he founded a famous Bach Cantata Series. As a concert organist, he has played throughout North America, Western Europe, the United Kingdom and Brazil, at regional national conventions of the American Guild of Organists, and at the 1987 International Congress of Organists in Cambridge, England. Marianne Weaver graduated from the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, where she studied flute with Gerald Carey and Samuel Baron. She completed her Master’s degree in flute at the Manhattan School of Music under the legendary William Kincaid of the Philadelphia Orchestra. She studied with Jean-Pierre Rampal in 1969 and with Marcel Moyse in 1980. Mrs. Weaver was first flutist of the Holy Trinity Bach Orchestra in New York for twenty-five years, and has performed almost every Bach flute part written. She has played with numerous other orchestral groups including the American Wind Symphony Orchestra, the Long Island Philharmonic, the Canterbury Chorale Orchestra, Musica Sacra, and several light opera groups. In 1994 she was made an honorary life member of the Village Light Opera Group. She has also had a successful teaching career in New York City. THE KIMMEL CENTER ORGAN The Fred J. Cooper Memorial Organ ranks as the largest mechanical action concert hall organ in the United States. Also home to the world-renowned Philadelphia Orchestra, the Kimmel Center was designed by New York architect Rafael Viñoly. The four-manual, 111-stop organ with nearly 7,000 pipes, can be played either from a mechanical action console or a second, moveable console on stage. The instrument was designed and built by Dobson Pipe Organ Builders, Lake City, Iowa, and is the firm’s Op. 76. ___________________________________ F. The new online dues collection system will be activated on or about May 15, 2011. New and renewing members will be able to log in to their own personalized user account, confirm or update their contact information, and renew online using a major credit card or pay later by sending a check. For those without Internet access, local chapters will provide a printed dues renewal form. “This is an exciting technological step forward into the brave new world of membership management and online communications with AGO members, chapter leaders, and AGO National Headquarters,” declared AGO Executive Director James Thomashower. “For the very first time in the history of the Guild, all local AGO chapters, Headquarters staff, and members will have 24/7 access to membership information, sharing a single database connecting nearly 20,000 members, subscribers, and friends. Because the local portion of AGO membership dues and contributions will be remitted back to local chapters via electronic funds transfers weekly, the new online dues collection system will help the AGO support a ‘greener’ environment by reducing the need for paper and postage.” Every AGO chapter will have its own unique dues renewal page and the ability to collect contributions to help support its general operations, scholarships, or special programs. Local chapters have been asked to identify by February 28, a Chapter Administrator (often the Registrar or Treasurer) who will take responsibility for the setup and management of the local chapter’s dues renewal Web page. The setup is simple for anyone with Internet access and basic computer skills. Chapter leaders will be able to view and print membership reports for their chapter from any computer connected to the Internet. Online training for chapter leaders will be offered in April and May, while ongoing support will be provided by AGO National Headquarters staff. | NEW JOB POSTING 1/17/12
My name is Rev. Stephen McGinnis and I am the Pastor at Holy Communion Lutheran Church in Portsmouth, VA. I have served on a part-time basis for the past 8 years. For health reasons, our organist of many years has had to retire, and now we are in a period of transition. We are a small multi-generational congregation with an average worship of about 50. Mario Bansen is our choir director and plays the ovation guitar. It has worked out well for us as we try to have upbeat services. We have a traditional service on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month based on ELW (Evangelical Lutheran Worship Book). The 2nd Sunday our service is based on our WOV Book (With One Voice) and is a blended service. The 4th Sunday we call our contemporary service, but it's not "strongly" contemporary, but focused on "upbeat" more contemporary music. Many of our older folks call this their favorite service. I am not a musician, but will describe our organ as best I can - It is a Baldwin and has the organ foot pedals and stops. Their are chimes in the back of the church associated with the organ. We also have a fairly new digital piano with the bells and whistles. Our organist frequently uses this in place of the organ for some of our music and some of our services. Since we consider ourselves in transition, our immediate need is for a supply organist or pianist for the 1st and 3rd Sundays. We have one worship service at 11:00 and choir practice is 6:30 on Tuesdays. Mario plays an early contemporary service at another church, and then comes for our 11:00 service. We thought that with your contacts in the music world, you might know of someone who would be interested in this position and helping our church grow. We are open to the possibility of a pianist instead of a pianist/organist. Please feel free to give me a call if you would like to talk more about our church and situation. We do appreciate your help. Steve McGinnis Pastor, Holy Communion Lutheran Church (H) 963-0455 I give you my home number because I am part time and am at the church only on Wed. mornings and other times as needed. Thanks again. ________________________________________________________ NEW JOB POSTING AS OF 6/3/11 United Methodist Church of Allen, in Eden, MD (just south of Salisbury) is seeking an organist or pianist.
