Message from the Dean |
| Greetings from the Salisbury chapter. As the only chapter on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, our membership includes musicians from a large geographic area. We meet for dinner and programs five times per year, and also sponsor many special projects including members’ recitals, organ restorations, youth choral festivals and hurricane relief.
Although we are a small chapter, we were recognized nationally for the largest increase in membership in our category in 2005-2006. This is a great place to live, work and make music! Join us, or let us know when you can visit. Susan Zimmer, Dean (410) 543-4835, ssz749@yahoo.com |

The installation of the organ continues. The work, being completed by Casavant Brothers in St. Hyacinthe, Quebec, and David Storey Organ Company in Baltimore, was delayed in November due to part suppliers being backed up. This of course took both organ companies into the Christmas Season which carried other engagements, and even though work continued on the installation during December, it was minimal; we all knew it would not get completed by Christmas. Work resumed the first week of January, and they are projecting the completion in mid-February. We will let everyone know when a new date has been established with Dr. Guenther for the Dedication concert, and we look forward to sharing this instrument with you again, at that time. In the meantime, you can log onto the church's web site and see the specifications and read a history of the instrument at http://www.asburyweb.org/Music/casavant_organ.htm. God bless you all, and bless your work in your respective congregations. Robert Robert E. Young, Director of Music Ministries Asbury United Methodist Church 1401 Camden Avenue Salisbury MD 21801 410-749-2131, x104 ___________________________________________________________ ORGAN CONCERT ANNOUNCEMENT: EPWORTH ORGAN DEDICATION CONCERT ON FRIDAY, MARCH 5TH We are pleased to announce Stefan Engels, world-renown organist, will present a dedicatory recital on our new Allen Organ on Friday evening, March 5th at 7:00 p.m. at Epworth United Methodist Church, Rehoboth Beach. Mr. Engels began his tenure as Professor of Organ in the fall of 2005 at one of Europe’s most prestigious and oldest musical institutions, the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Leipzig, Germany. Prior to this appointment he was Associate Professor of Organ at Westminster Choir College in Princeton, NJ. He maintains a vigorous international concert schedule and is a sought-after teacher, presenting lectures and master classes across Europe, North America and South Korea. His church positions while living in the U.S. included Organ Scholar at Northwestern University, Associate Organist at Fourth Presbyterian Church in Chicago, and Principal Organist at First Presbyterian Church in West Chester, PA. Mr. Engels has recorded two highly acclaimed Dupré CDs and one with works of Karg-Elert, Reger, Messiaen, and Germani on the Priory label. In this ongoing project, the first three CD’s are available for sale. Mr. Engels received his broad musical education in Germany and the U.S. He studied organ, piano, harpsichord, conducting and church music at the Musikhochschulen in Aachen, Düsseldorf and Köln. From 1993 until 1998 he pursued further organ studies with Robert Anderson in Dallas and Wolfgang Rübsam in Chicago. Mr. Engels was awarded the “Concerto Gold Medal” at the 1998 Calgary International Organ Competition. He is the founder and Artistic Director of the “European Organ Academy Leipzig” and was recently appointed Artistic Director of the “Jordan International Organ Competition” based at Columbus State University in Columbus, Georgia. Mr. Engels will be playing on Epworth’s new Allen Organ. The new Allen Q-345C Organ has a 3-manual console and a 58 Stop/232 voice system called Renaissance Quantum. This organ allows our organist to choose settings on 4 different organ types, called the Quad Suite™! This model has an upgrade with two more organ types added. The four in the original model has an American Classic specification with the full range of sounds, an English Cathedral specification with its richness, a French Romantic specification for the brightness, and a Neo-Baroque specification with its special flute, string and reed sounds, all comprised of unique pipe samples from the world’s finest examples of each major organ-building style. The two additional organ types are the Orchestral with 61 voices, and the Arp Schnitger, a tracker organ with 61 voices. There is also a MIDI sound and sequencer system from which one can draw a whole range of digital orchestral, percussive and popular sounds. The suggested admission donation is $15.00 which will benefit the Allen Organ Fund. Epworth Church is located at 19285 Holland Glade Road, off Route One Northbound, near the Tanger Seaside Outlet in Rehoboth Beach, DE. For additional information, contact the Church Office at 302-227-7743. www.epworth-rehoboth.org ___________________________________________________________ SAVE THIS DATE: Sunday, February 14 for a recital at Asbury UMC in Salisbury, hosted by our member Robert Young. Eileen Guenther, AGO President, will rededicate the organ after extensive renovations. PLEASE NOTE: THE ORGAN RECITAL ON FEBRUARY 14 HAS BEEN POSTPONED. I WILL POST FURTHER INFORMATION WHEN IT BECOMES AVAILABLE. ___________________________________________________________ Substitute organist or organist/choir director now available on Sundays. To my pleasant surprise, the Norfolk “Harborfest” was in process that weekend also, which gave many things to see and do. The “Town Point Park” is very much like Baltimore’s Harborplace, and in fact was built by the same company, the Rouse Company. The tall ships were in the harbor, and a Naval Base Cruise aboard the Victory Rover gave an opportunity for some great picture taking of the many large Naval ships, and three aircraft carriers that were in port. The fireworks that evening were as good a display as you would be able to see anywhere. They were wonderful to watch from the outside pool deck at the Norfolk Waterfront Marriott. Sunday, July 5 Registration opened at 2:00 pm, and at that time was an optional organ crawl to area churches in Norfolk. The first convention event was a Choral Evensong at the Epworth United Methodist Church, Norfolk. The organ was an Aeolian Skinner III/50. After returning to the hotel, the exhibits were open until midnight. Monday, July 6 The day started by the buses transporting us to the First Presbyterian Church, Norfolk, for a recital by Thomas Sheehan, the winner of the Quimby Regional Competition for Young Organists. He was excellent, and will be a future star in the AGO in years to come. The organ was a J.W. Walker and Sons three manual. Following the recital were various workshops in the area that we all walked to. The most popular was a choral reading session at Ghent UMC. Following the workshops, we went to the Ohef Sholom Temple for a concert by the Virginia Children’s Chorus. Lunch at the First Presbyterian Church followed the concert. There were a second session of workshops after lunch. 3:00 found us at the Christ and St. Luke’s Episcopal Church for a very dramatic presentation of “Daniel In Babylon, Op. 29” 1962 by Francis Jackson. That evening, we traveled to Virginia Beach, to the First Presbyterian Church of Virginia Beach, for the recital of Cameron Carpenter. The organ was a Reuter, three manual with antiphonal, 2005. I have never seen a church so totally packed with people as that was, and for good reason. Cameron Carpenter is only 28 years of age, but he is absolutely incredible. I have heard many people refer to him as the “New Virgil Fox” and he truly has earned that title. He was so well received that he got many standing ovations, and played a total of four encores. People just did not want to let him go, they just wanted more and more. I don’t think that I will ever forget that recital, as it was just that good! Tuesday, July 7 Tuesday began with a morning worship service at the Main Street UMC in Suffolk. It was then on to Williamsburg for the remainder of the day. First on the schedule in Williamsburg was a duel recital at the Williamsburg Presbyterian Church with Colin Andrews and Janette Fishell. They did a number of selections with four hands on one organ. The organ was a new John-Paul Buzard Pipe Organ, three manual, and was featured on the cover of the TAO magazine about a year ago. We had lunch on our own, in Williamsburg, and had lots of time to explore the colonial area. At 2:00 we went to the Kimball Theatre, in Merchant Square, and heard a lecture recital by Dean Shostak, playing the “Glass Armonica.” Next was to the College of William and Mary Campus, to the Wren Chapel, where we heard a lecture and recital by organist James Darling, on the one manual Wren Chapel Organ, Unknown Builder, c.1740. It is the original instrument, except that it now is powered by electricity. After a catered dinner at the Bruton Parish House, we proceeded to Bruton Parish Church, for a Candlelight Concert of organ and harpsichord music, performed by Bruton’s Director of Music, JanEl B.Will, and associate organist Rebecca E. Davy. A truly outstanding performance. The organ at Bruton Parish Church is a four manual Aeolian Skinner 1955. Wednesday, July 8 The morning had us going to an Organ Swell Recital at Trinity Episcopal Church in Portsmouth. It was organ with instruments including harp, Baroque dance, and violin. The organ was an Austin 1961, Walker Technical 1994, four manual. Late morning and early afternoon were two sessions of workshops of your choice, and later in the day, an organ recital by Alan Morrison at Christ and St. Luke’s Church in Norfolk. The closing event of the convention was at The Half Moone Cruise and Celebration Center, for our closing banquet, with entertainment by the Rhythm Project All Stars Steel Band. A beautiful closing, for a wonderful convention. A Few Final Thoughts First of all, I would like to thank the convention co-chairs John Dixon and Martin Sunderland for the wonderful job they did. It was a two and a half year project to bring this convention to what it was, and it could not have been better. Many thanks for all the work by you, and the Tidewater Chapter of the AGO. There were many commissioned works that premiered during the convention, and all registered attendees were given a spiral bound book of all the commissioned works, which included the copyright permission to copy and use these works at your own church. There is some wonderful music in that book, and it will be a great advantage to be able to use it. Attending from the Salisbury Chapter were Robert Young and Ralph Jacobus. Attending from the Southern DE Chapter were Jon Rania and Melanie Leinbach. __________________________________________________________ ORGANS FOR SALE - AL MURRELL - DAFFER ORGANS I would like to post four listings of Rodgers organs for sale in your newsletters if possible.
