Certification |
| The American Guild of Organists (AGO) is committed to:
- improve the proficiency of organists and conductors, - evaluate by examination attainments in organ playing, choral and instrumental training, and the theory and general knowledge of music, and - grant certificates to those who pass examinations. The AGO Service Playing Exam is well within the grasp of all who play the organ on a regular basis. Members are encouraged to take this exam. If you are not a member of the AGO, a Membership Form is included in this Web Site. Taking an AGO exam is not only a way for you to become a better musician, but it can also be a way to advertise the work of the AGO and broaden our visibility. When you pass an exam, use the letters after your name that you have earned (SPC, CAGO, ChM, AAGO, FAGO). People will ask what they mean and you will have the opportunity to tell them about the AGO. When you use your new initials in your church bulletin, your congregation will know that you are really working to become a better musician and therefore better able to serve your congregation (and more worthy of a raise!!). So, look in the July edition of The American Organist and see what the new exam requirements are. Decide which exam is best for you. Any organist playing or substituting regularly should have at least the SPC certificate. But, you don’t have to stop there—try the CAGO. If you are more inclined as a director, take the Choirmaster exam. Or, if you have a good grasp of music and are willing to do some intensive study, take the AAGO—and finally, go for the top, take the FAGO, which marks you at the highest level of achievement. If you need more information about taking the exams, call me at the numbers listed below and I’ll be glad to talk with you about the exam that’s right for you. Become a better musician—spread the word about your professional organization: The American Guild of Organists—and take one of the AGO exams! Contact National for information, forms, fees, copies of previous exams, and free Hymn Booklet: 212-870-2310 fax 212-870-2163 info@agohq.org www.agohq.org or, AGO National Headquarters The American Organist Magazine 475 Riverside Drive Suite 1260 New York, NY 10115 Contact Region III Exam Coordinator Dale Krider - 301-864-8880 for assistance in the process.
