Potomac Chapter

Last updated: July 29, 2010

Message from the Dean

Greetings to all visitors to the Potomac AGO Chapter's webpage! I hope that you will visit this site often to learn about the American Guild of Organists, the monthly programs of the Potomac Chapter, news of area concerts and organ recitals, job vacancies, and other activities which help make the work of the church musician visible in the Washington, D.C. area. You can also visit the District of Columbia and Northern Virginia Chapter websites for similar information.

We hope to see you at many chapter programs this year, and please give us, your board, your feedback on what events, programs, and activities you would like to take part in. Don't forget that next year the D.C. Chapter is host to the AGO National Conventions, July 4-8, 2010. Exciting recitals, concerts, worship services and workshops are planned at most of the city's important churches and concert venues. Major new works from internationally-renowned composers have been commissioned, and the entire week will prove to be a musical feast you won't want to miss.

I hope to see many of you at one or more of our chapter programs, (listed on this website), and hope that you will take advantage of all the educational, social networking, and professional opportunities which the AGO and our local DC-area chapters have to offer.

With best wishes,
John Brooks, Dean

Certification

The American Guild of Organists (AGO) is committed to:
- improve the proficiency of organists and conductors,
- evaluate by examination attainments in
organ playing,
choral and instrumental training, and
the theory and general knowledge of music, and
- grant certificates to those who pass examinations.

The AGO Service Playing Exam is well within the grasp of all who play the organ on a regular basis. Members are encouraged to take this exam. If you are not a member of the AGO, a Membership Form is included in this Web Site.
Taking an AGO exam is not only a way for you to become a better musician, but it can also be a way to advertise the work of the AGO and broaden our visibility. When you pass an exam, use the letters after your name that you have earned (SPC, CAGO, ChM, AAGO, FAGO). People will ask what they mean and you will have the opportunity to tell them about the AGO. When you use your new initials in your church bulletin, your congregation will know that you are really working to become a better musician and therefore better able to serve your congregation (and more worthy of a raise!!).
So, look in the July edition of The American Organist and see what the new exam requirements are. Decide which exam is best for you. Any organist playing or substituting regularly should have at least the SPC certificate. But, you don’t have to stop there—try the CAGO. If you are more inclined as a director, take the Choirmaster exam. Or, if you have a good grasp of music and are willing to do some intensive study, take the AAGO—and finally, go for the top, take the FAGO, which marks you at the highest level of achievement.
If you need more information about taking the exams, call me at the numbers listed below and I’ll be glad to talk with you about the exam that’s right for you.
Become a better musician—spread the word about your professional organization: The American Guild of Organists—and take one of the AGO exams!
