Message from the Dean |
| On March 13, 1993, an organizational meeting to form a new AGO Chapter was held in Elizabeth City at First United Methodist Church. The 25 persons in attendance braved a March 'Northeaster', which was later called the storm of the century, to attend. The name, Northeastern NC Chapter AGO was chosen, identifying the 8 counties represented by those attending. The program featured Christopher Harrell, organist from Eure, NC, and a graduate of Oberlin Conservatory, and one of our charter members. Christopher was featured on "Pipedreams" April 25, 1993, on National Public Radio. He was later awarded a Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarship for a year of study in Paris at the Conservatoire Superieu, with Madame Marie-Louise Langlais, beginning in September. Others playing on the program were: E. Rodney Trueblood, James Hyatt, Bruce Lee, Caroline Wright, Lynwood Winslow III and Mike Morgan.
We received our Charter from National the last of May, 1993. |

| Season's greetings to all near and far! Let me begin this letter by offering several expressions of gratitude. First off, Let me thank Rachel Gragson for moving us with an inspiring recital at my church, Memorial Baptist in Greenville. I must say, this concert was the finest that I have ever heard Rachel play. A CD recording was made, and is available to all who want one.
Second, let me thank Lynwood Winslow and the Albemarle Chorale for always providing us with a superb Christmas concert each year! Bravo! We are so grateful to you for the beautiful music you provide us with to glorify Christ and celebrate the sacred birth! This past week a package arrived in my mailbox. To my surprise it was a very generous gift card from you all, the Northeastern NC Chapter of the AGO in honor of my upcoming wedding. Words cannot express how grateful Nikki and I are to you for such a thoughtful gift. We are truly thankful! Five years ago, we were pleased to have a young man who grew up in our area bring us a fine organ dedication recital at First United Methodist Church in Elizabeth City. Weil Sawyer played a recital in honor of the new Cornel Zimmer/Hook & Hastings organ to a packed house in January of 2006. We will welcome Weil back this month to bring us another recital. This time, Weil will present us with a concert at First Baptist Church of Ahoskie on January 15, 2011 at 2:00 PM. The church is located at 312 West Main Street in Ahoskie. We will gather for lunch at 12:30 PM at Charlie's West Grill & Ice Cream. The restaurant is located 921 Memorial Drive, East in Ahoskie. Weil holds the B.M. Degree in Organ Performance/Sacred Music from the North Carolina School of the Arts and the M.M. Degree in Organ Performance from ECU. He is currently attending ECU pursuing his certification in Music Education. Weil has won several competitions including the Music Teachers National Association Organ Competition in 2003 held in Cincinnati and the Regional American Guild of Organists Organ Competition in 2004 held in Charleston. He was a Rising Star Artist for the National AGO Convention in 2004 held in Los Angeles. He was also a finalist in the Arthur Poister Organ Competition in 2009. Mr. Sawyer has performed throughout North Carolina, Tennessee, South Carolina, Mississippi, and New York. Weil is the Minister of Music/Organist at Westminster United Methodist Church in Kinston. Please join us for this wonderful presentation by Weil! Soli Deo Gloria! Buddy |
