Message from the Dean

November 15, 2009

Dear AGO members,

I will start by wishing you all a bountiful Thanksgiving, bountiful in the constant blessings that we receive from the Lord. Just think how fortunate we are, to be free,
to be able to worship as we please, and to be given the talents by God to be able to provide "the song" for our congregations. I don't take much for granted anymore. (A sign of my age?). Probably.

We have had an exciting Fall. Thank you all for two solid choral rehearsals in September and October at Barbara Taranto's Church of the Nazarene. We followed the second
rehearsal with a well-attended meeting at the Crystal Diner nearby, where our members put the finishing touches on our scholarship application. A debt of gratitude goes to Peg Bendel, Barbara Dippolito, and others who voiced their opinions and gave their ideas, helping to complete the
final document. I believe we are ready for candidates. This application will appear on our web site shortly.

The festive days lie ahead. All the best to you.

Sincerely, Sara Hoey, Dean

Local Events

THE OCEAN COUNTY CHAPTER'S 31ST ANNUAL CHOIR FESTIVAL
WILL BE HELD JANUARY 31, 2010

You are cordially invited to join with the American Guild of Organists, Ocean County Chapter, to participate in our 2010 Annual Organ and Choir Festival. Singers from your choir and congregation are welcome. We look forward to your participation and the exciting experience of performing beautiful music with many singers.

We are thankful for the opportunity to present the 2010 Choir Festival at St. Pio of Pietrelcina, Route 35 and Washington Street, Lavallette, NJ. The date of the Festival is Sunday January 31, 2010 at 3:00 PM.

Following is the list of anthems selected for the 2010 Choir Festival. All this music is available from Young’s Music of Whitehall, PA. Their phone number is 1-800/628-6204. Young’s is offering a 25% discount for the purchase of Festival music, so be sure to mention the Ocean County AGO Choir Festival when ordering. Order your music early, well before our September and October rehearsals.

September 18 and October 16 (both dates are the third Fridays) will be our first opportunities to rehearse the Festival music together. These rehearsals will be held at the First Church of the Nazarene, 188 Route 37 W. in Toms River, at 7:00 PM. If directions are needed, please do not hesitate to call Barbara Taranto 732/349-2189. Good rehearsals at these dates will better prepare us for the final rehearsals in January.

Saturday, January 16th rehearsal will be held at St. Andrew U. M. Church, Church Road, Toms River, beginning at 9:30AM until 12:00 noon. Saturday, January 23rd rehearsal will also be held at St. Andrew U.M. Church, beginning at 9:30AM until 12:00 noon. The 16th will be a sectional rehearsal and the 23rd will be a complete choral rehearsal. At this point we should be reasonably well prepared for a glorious performance. Our final rehearsal, which of course is mandatory, will be held on Friday evening January 29th beginning at 7:00 PM. at St. Pio of Pietrelcina. At this rehearsal seating and processional arrangements will be finalized as well as last minute details.

Choir Festivals over the past many years have been excellent, and we look forward to our 2010 Festival, our 31st, to be better than the last. With your presence and singers from your congregation and choir, this 2010 Festival will be most glorious in praise to God.

We look forward to seeing you at the first rehearsal in September. The Festival Directors are Sara Hoey, 732/295-9485 and Barbara Taranto, 732/349-2189. Any questions, don’t hesitate to call.

Our best regards, Sara and Barbara

We will also be singing charts by Louis Lewandowski, Roberto Caamano, Ola Gjeilo, Jeffery Ames, Ralph Johnson, Moses Hogan, and of course F. Melius Christiansen. The choir and I are utterly estatic for this upcoming tour. I am even more excited to be able to share this music with my friends and family back home. This concert is somewhat of a homecoming for Dr. Armstrong and I as both of us were born and raised on the east coast. I hope you take advantage of this amazing opportunity to hear one of the nation's pioneers in a cappella choir music. Below is a full list of our stops on tour.

AMERICAN GUILD OF ORGANISTS
OCEAN COUNTY CHAPTER
REGULAR MEETING, SEPTEMBER 22, 2009

The American Guild of Organists (AGO) Ocean County Chapter convened at Christ Episcopal Church in Toms River at 7 p.m. Brad Wilson was the host.

Eight people attended. They were Peggy Bendel, Barbara D'Ippolito, Sara Hoey, Dee Lepley, Ernest Hamilton Jr., Mimi Mansky, Jack Milkovitz, and Brad Wilson.

Sara spoke about the $16,000 that Fred Muller had given us as part of the late Hazel Blakelock's will with the condition that the money be used towards a music scholarship. Sara said that Hazel had been an organist, having studied with Harold Friedell, a well-known composer of sacred music.

The stipulations of the scholarship was that a student had to be a junior or senior in college, a music major, studying the organ with intentions of going into the field of choral and or church music.

Ernest Hamilton suggested taking the church musician certificate course at Westminster Choir School in Princeton; this course encompasses Hymnody, Conducting, Organ lessons, along with theory and harmony.

Sara brought up the names of two students who are members of the Ocean County AGO chapter. Louis Castano is studying mathematics and music, and Timothy Brendler is at a music college, but not sure if he is studying the organ. Ernest said that his own education included a major in music and a minor in voice.

We decided that the scholarship candidate has to be a resident of New Jersey, and preferably, from Ocean County, but that students from other parts of the state would be welcome to fill out a scholarship application. The award given, as part of the scholarship, would be up to $2,000.

Sara Hoey learned from her conversation with Shirley Norby, a Trustee in the Monmouth Chapter of the AGO chapter that there haven't been any scholarship students applying in the past two years. The Monmouth County AGO Chapter has definite requirements and they are that the applicant must play an organ work from the Baroque period, Nineteenth Century, and Twentieth or Twenty-First Century.

It was also suggested that scholarship requirements be widened to include high school students so that they could have the opportunity of applying for this scholarship. Peggy Bendel said that the student's school transcript should accompany the application. Sara Hoey requested that Barbara D’Ippolito speak to Fred Muller about broadening the requirements of the scholarship application.

Ernest Hamilton mentioned the October 11th organ concert at Community Reformed Church where he is the organist. He also suggested a repertoire session at a future meeting. Peggy Bendel and Barbara D’Ippolito said that we all should be learning new hymns.

Bill Todt from Monmouth County AGO Chapter is having a workshop in creating hymn tune preludes. Barbara D'Ippolito said that this workshop should be in a centrally-located church in Ocean County inasmuch as Little Silver where Bill Todt lives would be a "hike" for the Ocean County members. Different churches were named. Brad Wilson will be moving out of state to Maryland in a month or two, so he didn't want to commit to volunteering his church, Christ Episcopal.

The Ocean County Chapter is willing to have new members join as chapter members, wherein they would play $35 dollars. However, they would not receive "The American Organist" magazine, nor would they be allowed national voting privileges in the AGO. There was also some discussion about people who want to join, who are in financial need, paying $5 or $10 dollars and the rest would be made up by the our chapter.

Ernest said he would ask Susan Shanahan, the Organist from Christ Evangelical Church in Whiting if she wanted to join our chapter. We were told to speak to Sara Hoey, Dean and Bernice Kephart, Sub-Dean regarding membership options.

The meeting adjourned at 8:45 p.m.

The next meeting is on October 16th at the Crystal Diner, northeast corner of Route 37 and Main St., (a.k.a. Route 166) from 9 to 10 p.m. following the Choral Festival rehearsal. We will check up on the progress of the scholarship applications.

Respectfully submitted
Mimi Mansky, Secretary

AMERICAN GUILD OF ORGANISTS
OCEAN COUNTY CHAPTER
REGULAR MEETING, October 16, 2009

The Ocean County Chapter of the American Guild of Organist’s had their monthly meeting at the Crystal Diner, corner Route 166 (a.k.a. Main Street and Route 37) in Toms River, on October 16, 2009. The meeting started at 9:40 p.m.

Ten people attended and they were Barbara D’Ippolito, Ron Howell, Sara Hoey, Bernice Kephart, Dee Lepley, Mimi Mansky, Jack Milkovitz, Polly Moore, Barbara Taranto, and Brad Wilson.

The wording of the scholarship application was discussed by Sara Hoey, Barbara D’Ippolito, and Mimi Mansky. Ernest Hamilton, Jr., the Organist/Choir Director at Community Reformed Church had suggested that the application should mentioned the fact that the organist would have to play two contrasting pieces as part of the auditioning process; for instance, a piece from the Baroque era, and the 2nd piece would be a contemporary work from the Twentieth or Twenty-First Century. Barbara D’Ippolito suggested that the following wording be used on the application form that the applicant be “pursuing a music degree with an organ concentration.”
Barbara D’Ippolito informed Barbara Taranto, who is in charge of composing the application form, needs to get it to her by Tuesday in order for her to send it to Ted Moller who had presented us with a check to be used towards an Organist’s Scholarship.

Sara mentioned that she had spoken to Bill Todt about his hymn/prelude workshop being held on November 16th at his home in Little Silver. He told her that he wants to see how well it works out and what type of response he receives from this event before he commits to holding a similar workshop for our Ocean County chapter. We’re hoping that if all goes well, we can have him speak to our chapter in the spring.

The October 11th concert held at Community Reformed Church was discussed, but was not considered an AGO event since it featured organists from the Whiting area only.

NEW BUSINESS

Polly Moore, choir director at Christ Episcopal Church in Toms River, decided it was best to put the plans for another Clergy/Musician dinner on hold due to the fact Mother Joan, a priest at Christ is going on sabbatical for four months beginning in April. Barbara D’Ippolito suggested her church, St. Paul’s Lutheran in Beachwood for a similar dinner.

A number of organ concerts were suggested for May; Ron proposed attending one at the Sacred Heart Basilica in Newark, NJ. Sara Hoey mentioned St. John’s the Divine in New York City. Bernice Kephart offered a suggestion regarding Princeton University Chapel.

The meeting ended at 10:25 p.m.
