Congratulations to Chapter Member Ikuko Weller, recently selected as a Guest Organist at the Salt Lake Tabernacle.

The Super Saturday Organ Workshop was held at BYU-Idaho on October 10th. It was well attended and was a huge success. Thanks to Ikuko Weller for again heading up the Workshop and thanks to the instructors and all who helped.

Thanks to Wendy Horman for sending me this story and obtaining permission to reprint it here:

Order a double shot of faith
Old church pipe organ finds new calling as espresso bar

Coffee may not be everyone's cup of tea, but the folks at one Idaho Falls church hope the national beverage of choice will act as a link between congregation members and newcomers.

New Life Assembly Church is holding a grand opening celebration Easter Sunday for its espresso bar, dubbed Connection Caf.

The bar is actually a refashioned pipe organ that was built at the turn of the 20th century and came to rest in the 12th Street church in the early 1980s after a series of stops.

Pastor Jay Spangenberg, who took over the ministry at the Assemblies of God-affiliated church in August, learned the organ was not functional and that its value, outside of its historical context, was nil.

Yet Spangenberg could not fathom destroying the massive and complex machine.

"We didn't want to take it to the dump," he said. "We had planned to open an espresso bar, so we started thinking maybe we could do something with this organ that has some history here with the church."

After some intensive research concerning the provenance of the organ, Spangenberg and his crew have done just that.

Located in a room near the sanctuary, the espresso bar features a 9-foot counter refashioned from the instrument.

The bar's theme honors the wind-driven machine, with wooden boxes that once made up part of the organ's wind system -- pivotal to producing sound -- lined up along the wall behind the counter.

Accounts suggest the organ has not always enjoyed such happy circumstances. After being dislodged from its original home in a Montana church, it was moved to a brothel and stored in a barn. And it may have been subjected to other indignities before arriving in 1983 at New Life Assembly.

Salvaging an outsized organ is not a calling to take lightly, but Spangenberg and his wife, Cindy, believe redeeming a castaway instrument meshes with their overall spiritual mission.

And so does specialty coffee.

The donation-only espresso bar is a concept the Spangenbergs have employed at other churches, too, including Nampa's Christian Faith Center Assembly.

It's part of a broader outreach, Spangenberg said.

"Church is about relationships," he said. "The espresso bar is a way for anyone who comes to visit us that day to slow down, have a cup of coffee and visit with us. We want to build bridges into our community by letting people know we love them, and that God loves them."

Stop by

The grand opening of the Connection Caf espresso bar begins at 9 a.m. Easter Sunday with a free breakfast. It's open to the public. Also, the church at 2170 E. 12th St. welcomes all comers from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today to color Easter eggs and engage in other activities for children and families.

The espresso bar will be open to the public starting at 9 a.m. each Sunday and at 6 p.m. Wednesdays, when the church engages in Bible-based discussions.

Chapter member Penny Dixon's choir at First Lutheran Church on Sunnyside in Idaho Falls recently made the news. Here is a link with video:

http://www.localnews8.com/Global/story.asp?s=9729948

The choir sang at the Advent Choral Festival in Prague with an extension to Vienna last November and December. They were joined by only one other American choir and sang with 50 other choirs from across the globe. Congratulations, Penny!

Becky Parkinson reminds everyone that she is available for piano and organ lessons. Please have anyone interested contact her at 522-0937 or parkinsonre@byui.edu.

Chapter member Gordon Lewis passed away on January 15th. The Chapter members express their condolences to his wife Rosellen and to his family. Here is the obituary:

POCATELLO - C. Gordon Lewis, 89, passed away in a local health care facility on Jan. 15, 2009.
He was born Jan. 24, 1919, in Lansing, Mich., to Ralph Henry and Blanche Strang Lewis. He attended Michigan State University, graduating in 1941 with a B.S. in chemical engineering. At MSU, he was inducted into the Tau Beta Pi and Phi Kappa Phi honor societies,, and was a member of Alpha Chi Sigma. Following graduation, he was employed by DuPont as a chemist in Flint, Mich.
He and Rosellen Dudgeon were married on October 9, 1942, in East Lansing, Michigan.
In 1944, Gordon began working on the Manhattan Project at Hanford, Wash. Over the next 22 years, Gordon worked for General Electric at Hanford in various managerial capacities involving nuclear reactor operations and power.
Moving to San Jose, Calif., in 1966, Gordon continued to work for G.E. He held both training and managerial positions at home and abroad, most notably as project manager for nuclear power supply at Nine Mile Point 2.
Being led by the Lord to make Pocatello their retirement home, Gordon and Rosellen moved here in late 1985, following his retirement in May of that year.
Gordon loved numerous outdoor activities, especially mountain climbing in the Cascades. He played the trumpet most of his life, and a retirement desire was fulfilled in learning to play the organ. He was a member of the American Guild of Organists. He had a lifelong interest in trains and model railroads, and was a member of the Pocatello Model Railroad and Historical Society.
Gordon was a steadfast Christian. He had served in various capacities in a number of church communities, most recently in the First Presbyterian Church. Gordon is survived by his devoted wife, Rosellen; sister, Lauralee Adams; daughter, Carol Hopkins; son, Alan (Tracy) Lewis; son, Wayne (Laurie) Lewis; nine grandchildren, Allison, Peter, Shannon, Andrew, Audrey, Stephen, Kristina, Stephanie and Heidi; and three great-grandchildren, Chlóe, Hunter and Jordan. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Marian Joanna.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, January 24, 2009, at 2 p.m., in the First Presbyterian Church, corner of seventh and Lewis Streets, Pocatello with the Rev. Pamela W. Mayes conducting. This celebration of Gordon's life will take place on what would have been his 90th birthday.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to Open Doors Ministries at www.OpenDoorsUSA.org.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Cornelison-Henderson Funeral Home, 431 N. 15th Ave., Pocatello. Online guest book and condolences available at www.cornelisonfh.com.

We held the Super Saturday Organ Workshop on Saturday, October 18, at BYU Idaho. BYU Idaho Organ faculty Dr. Daniel Kerr, Dr. Darwin Wolford (retired), and Rebecca Parkinson, along with Dr. Don Cook, BYU Provo Organ faculty member, taught the classes. We had over 100 people in attendance and it was a great success. Thanks to Chapter Member Ikuko Weller who organized the event. Here is a link to photos from Wendy Horman taken at the workshop.

The Chapter was a co-sponsor of Baroque Week at Idaho State University beginning November 2nd. The Week opened with an organ recital by James Drake at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Pocatello. Chapter member David Parry also played two hymns, one at the beginning and one at the end, with the audience singing. This recital was also the Chapter's contribution to the "International Year of the Organ."
