Message from the Dean |
| Your AGO chapter's season is off to an electric start! Nearly 30 members and guests ate at the kick-off dinner and were treated to an even sweeter recital by John Allegar at Holy Trinity Lutheran, 300 E. Rosemary St., Chapel Hill (across from the Planetarium). Not only were we treated to his artistic playing, but we reveled in a Franck duo with piano, using this new Casavant tracker pipe organ installation as it will function most of the time, in a worship setting. If that weren't enough, we got to sing two great hymns with brass and organ, led by AGO chapter board member and HTLC Organist/Choirmaster, Valerie Lefever Hughes, as we dedicated this new instrument's service to God. Lastly, the used organ music sale was a success, bringing in over $50 this first time. Please continue to purge your shelves of organ music so that others might benefit from these sales. Two scholarships were awarded last week: Michael Jon Bennett and Tanner Winchester, whom I congratulate!
Meet us with lots of your friends at University UMC in Chapel Hill the Friday of Halloween (Oct. 28 @ 7:30pm) for a very accessible "PipeScreams" recital by members, plus the handbell choir from UUMC, under the leadership of host, Tim Baker. If you'd like to play something appropriate for the occasion, email Tim please: tbaker@chapelhilluumc.org Plan ahead to "singing for your supper" on Tues., Nov. 15 @ First Presbyterian Church, Durham, and sing the latest and greatest of choral anthems with members accompanying. Singing in this beautiful space is joy enough, but add a soup and salad on a brisk fall evening (starting @ 6:15pm) at the church (email Lyn Francisco mariaefrancisco@gmail.com ) so we'll have plenty of soul food before you have food for the soul singing from 7-8pm). If you'd like to accompany while I direct the choral reading session, please email me dsteinert@christmethodist.org and bring your choir members! January 7 we have a special luncheon event at Sub-Dean Laurel Siviglia's home to spread the news to piano teachers about the King of Instruments! February 13 is an opportunity to play new music, organ music by "Composers of Color" at Watts Street Baptist Church in Durham--let me know via email if you'd like to play! Apr. 21 is an unique opportunity of an Organ Crawl at School of the Arts in Winston-Salem--we will commute for that Saturday field trip and bring your organ shoes! Summer 2012 we will be taking our music of the centuries for our beloved instrument to the people as members perform 30-minute recitals at churches throughout our AGO chapter area, from Pittsboro to Durham and beyond! Email me to pick a week (June 13-Aug. 15, not including the first week of July due to the national AGO convention in Nashville, TN) for the organ and the program you'd like to play! Please consider giving back some time to this vital organization; the American Guild of Organists supports you and what you love to do, whether as a vocation or an avocation! If you'd like to work on one of the events above helping organize it, set up for it, advertise it, or in any way be present for it, or if you'd like to help plan for the 2012-13 season (2010 National Young Artists Competition in Organ Performance (NYACOP) winner and Durham resident, Dongho Lee, kicks off the season in Sept. 2012--date and time TBD). Together, we can "Grow the Guild," and with more members, we can program even more to support you locally and regionally! Have a grateful year serving! Dr. Daniel Steinert, AAGO Dean |
