Message from the Dean

Happy New Year! Now that we’ve all had a little break from the intensity of Advent and Christmas preparations and performances, it’s time to wind down among friends at our annual Epiphany Party hosted by Doug Ludlum on Friday, January 13th. Please join us for a relaxed evening together and the announcement of the 2012 Emily Remington Scholarship recipient. The party will begin at 7:30 pm this year. Doug’s address is 65 Radcliffe Street.

The board is in the process of planning winter and spring programs and the POE+ Committee is planning the 2012 Pipe Organ Encounter+ for June 11-15. Our brochure will be printed and ready for circulation within the next couple of weeks and we have already had inquiries from the national website advertising. Look for our ad in the January issue of The American Organist and be sure to spread the word that we are taking registrations for this excellent opportunity for professional development. Organists of all skills levels are invited to participate, as well as pianists who are interested in beginning organ study. For those interested in AGO Certification, Dr. Dean Billmeyer, a member of the AGO’s Committee on Professional Certification, will be among our distinguished faculty and available to guide participants through the certification process.

The prospect of a fresh New Year, filled with possibilities and new beginnings is upon us, and I hope to see you at Doug’s on the 13th to celebrate and toast the New Year with us!

Welcome to the Charleston Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. We are a community of organists, as well as music lovers, and proficiency on the organ is not a requirement for membership! If you would like to join our organization please contact me at 843-557-7208 or through my email address at LorettaHaskell@moremusicplease.com. Membership includes a subscription to The American Organist and the chapter newsletter, The Voluntary Trumpet. We are looking forward to all upcoming concerts that members will be directing and in which they will be performing during the holiday season, and will keep you informed on this website of dates and locations.

Please consider joining our friendly community, either through membership or attendance at any of our meetings or concerts. We always are open and appreciative of your support and input.

INFORMATION ON POE+ (PIPE ORGAN ENCOUNTER, FOR ADULTS)

The Charleston Chapter will host a POE+ June 11-15, 2012, the week immediately following the end of Spoleto USA 2012. PIPE ORGAN ENCOUNTER PLUS (POE+) is a week long summer organ program for adults, ages 19 and older. Two tracks of instruction are offered: beginning and experienced. Beginning students are proficient pianists who will learn the basics of organ playing including technique, pedaling, and registration. More experienced players will continue to expand their repertoire while gaining expertise in hymn playing, sight reading, and transposition—skills that may lead to qualifying as a candidate for the AGO Service Playing certificate. All students will gain greater confidence and competence in organ playing under the guidance of an outstanding faculty.

Brochures that include registration for participants will be available January 22nd. If you would like a brochure or any other information regarding the POE+ please contact the POE+ Director, Loretta Haskell at LorettaHaskell@moremusicplease.com.

Pipe Organ Encounters is an educational outreach program of the American Guild of Organists. Major funding for Pipe Organ Encounters is provided by the Associated Pipe Organ Builders of America. Additional support is provided by the American Institute of Organbuilders. Permanently endowed AGO scholarships are provided in memory of Charlene Brice Alexander, Robert S. Baker, Seth Bingham, Clarence Dickinson, Philip Hahn, Charles N. Henderson, Alfred E. Lunsford, Ruth Milliken, Ned Siebert and Martin M. Wick; and in honor of Anthony Baglivi, Philip E. Baker, Morgan and Mary Simmons and the Leupold Foundation.

By unanimous action of the board our chapter has contributed $250 to the Charleston Symphony Orchestra in memory of David Stahl, late music director.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FROM THE AGO NATIONAL HEADQUARTERS:
In an effort to increase the value of the benefits package for AGO voting members, access to the Positions Available listings on the AGO National Web site has been limited exclusively to AGO voting members as of Monday, December 15. It is appropriate that these listings should be made available only to voting members, since members’ dues pay for the operation of the Guild’s Web site and maintenance of its job postings board. In addition, this new limitation will ensure that only those organists who have agreed to abide by the AGO’s Code of Ethics and Code of Professional Standards will have access to the jobs advertised on the AGO’s Web site.

IMPORTANT MEMBER LOGIN INFORMATION
When you go to view the details of a Position Available online, you will be asked to fill in a User Name and Password. Your User Name and Password will be your unique AGO identification number. This number is located above your name on the address label that appears on your copy of TAO each month. When prompted to fill in the User Name and Password fields, please enter your ID number in both fields to gain access to the details of all job openings. This login procedure may be further refined and enhanced in the weeks ahead.

We look forward to providing this valuable benefit exclusively to AGO voting members. The Guild is widely recognized by religious institutions as the world’s largest and most prestigious association for professional organists, and this new policy will help us to preserve and protect our well-deserved reputation for excellence.

If you have any questions about this change, please feel free to contact AGO Headquarters during business hours at 212-870-2310 or e-mail us at members@agohq.org.

Shopping for American Guild of Organists gifts is easy. All merchandise can be ordered online at www.agohq.org/store or by phoning AGO store manager Harold Calhoun, 212-870-2311 (ext. 4318) or 800-AGO-5115. Additionally, orders can be placed via postal mail using the order form found on page 9 of each issue of The American Organist Magazine. All orders totaling $30 or more will qualify for a free gift: a CD recording of 2006 NYACOP winner Scott Montgomery.

A.S.A.P
The After School Arts Program is a non-profit outreach organization at Johns Island Presbyterian Church designed to make quality arts instruction available to children from low-income families. The program allows students to receive music lessons from a faculty of qualified volunteers at a nominal fee.

Volunteers are needed to bring healthy snacks on Thursday afternoons and/or to man the registration desk. If you are interested in volunteering on a weekly, monthly, or one-time basis, contact Sarah Smith (559-9380, ssmith@jipc.org).

Qualified teachers are needed to serve our students so we can continue to grow. Music is a life-long gift and we believe that every child should have the opportunity to develop that gift. If you or someone you know is a music teacher who would like to give a little extra to help change someone’s life, contact Sarah Smith (559-9380, ssmith@jipc.org).

PROFESSIONAL CONCERNS CORNER by Porter Remington

REMEMBER to take the survey! If you have any questions, please contact Ed LeRoy (eleroy44@aol.com) or Porter Remington (bachfan14@bellsouth.net).

The Professional Concerns committee has worked during the summer to prepare a quick and easy survey for our chapter. The questions are about the positions you hold, your education, wedding fees and funeral fees. The results will show how the Charleston area’s musicians are being compensated for the work they are doing.

We are using an internet tool called ‘Survey Monkey.’ The results are tabulated and sent to us. It is a totally anonymous survey. There is no way for anyone’s identification to be discovered.

The survey will be sent to you via e-mail. It is short – maybe a five minute questionnaire prepared by Jason Pedeaux, Tom Bailey and Porter Remington.

If you have friends that are not AGO members, please send the survey to them and ask them to take it. We want everyone in the Charleston area to answer the questions. We have decided a 75 mile radius around Charleston should be the limit. That would include Moncks Corner, Beaufort, Walterboro, etc. The only request that we have is, PLEASE, take it only ONE TIME.

We will send it out in a few weeks. The deadline for returning it will be November 1, 2011.

Porter Remington bachfan21@juno.com
