Message from the Dean

Dear Colleagues,

Our much awaited trip to Longwood Gardens is coming up soon on May 5th, details below. Presentation of the organ by Justin Hartz, resident organist, organist-choir director at Christ Church, Riverton, NJ, and a past dean of our chapter, will occur from 1:00-3:00 p.m. You no doubt read the series of articles which appeared in TAO several months ago about this legendary organ's history, and the extensive work which was recently completed. This is an opportune time to hear the organ, and I know you are as excited as I am!

Also, we are invited to a home-cooked dinner and evening of music from 4:30-7:00 p.m. - see below.

This day is so exciting that we are extending invitations to the members of the Middlesex (NJ) Chapter and the Wilmington (PA) Chapter!

LONGWOOD GARDENS: Entrance fee is $18 per person (age 62+ is $15; students up to age 22 is $8), but parking is free! Go online for directions and any other information, www.longwoodgardens.org. It is a 10 min. leisurely stroll through lovely grounds to the Conservatory where the organ is located in the Ballroom. While you are online be totally awed by the scope and beauty of this unusual place with both indoor and outdoor gardens! You may very well want to arrive early and walk around before the 1:00 p.m. presentation.

Lunch: Food and drink (except bottled water) are not allowed on the premises, but there is a cafeteria (the Terrace) where you may buy lunch. Justin says many find it quicker and easier to just go back to the car and quickly eat your lunch there! Or, my idea is to eat a huge breakfast to tide over until the dinner and carry a bottle of water.

Trying out the organ: Anyone who would like to play the organ must submit the title and composer to Justin by Wed., April 25, so that he can

(1) set up registration (he says this is necessary), and (2) select a variety of pieces that fit the time. Let Justin know via e-mail, justinhartz@juilliardalumni.net, or myself, junetipton@comcast.net or Mary Giordmaine, giordmaine@att.net.

DINNER: After Justin's program and a walk about the Gardens, for a donation of $10 per person, we are invited to a supper party that our member Greg R. Smith is co-hosting at the home of David Bowlsbey, former AGO Dean of the Wilmington (PA) AGO Chapter, and Director of Music at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd. We will experience both the home-cooked supper and "riparian entertainments" in Mr. Bowlsbey's home situated in a grove of 60 foot tall oak and poplar trees, with a patio overlooking the Shellpot Creek (think Wright's "Falling Water"). There is both a Baldwin and a Stieff grand piano in the living room. Duets, anyone? All food and soft drinks will be provided; BYOB of wine or beer is fine. Please e-mail Greg by May 3rd that you are coming at gregrussellsmith@hotmail.com.

Directions to the dinner will be given out to those attending on that day. It is only a 25 min. drive, headed north, with an easy entrance to I-95 just a mile away.

A lovely day when music and nature meet in utmost color and beauty! I look forward to seeing many of you there!
