Greetings from the Canton Chapter of the AGO! The Canton Chapter was chartered on June 14, 1954 and continues to be an active chapter to this day. We have 81 members in our chapter serving in local churches of every denomination. Our chapter meets monthly at a different church or other venue from September through May. Visitors are most welcome to attend any of our meetings. |

| WELCOME BACK FROM HOLIDAY TIME!
I hope everyone had a great time this summer. The time just flew away for me. I am elated to become your Dean. I know I will learn much during these two years. I am looking forward to seeing many of you at each meeting. The program committee has an interesting line up of programs for you to play in, listen to and learn from. Please come and enjoy yourselves. Nancymae Scheurer NATIONAL AGO CONVENTION REPORT BY RICHARD GARDINER There were approximately 10-12 of the Canton AGO Organization in attendance at the National Convention. Despite the heat, everything was managed and performances were great. We were fortunate to be able to ride many buses that were there to make sure we got to the “church on time” and in comfort. There was no bride Godzilla’s in the group. There were only wonderful organists who had many pieces to share with us. After the opening ceremony on Monday at the Washington National Cathedral, we were involved in many concerts during the five days. We were transported to different churches in the a.m. We listened to different organists and choirs perform their music. Some days you wondered how the structures withstood the vibration of the music that was being played on the organs. Each building was beautiful in its own way and was its own missionary tool to the world. The music added to the beauty of the surroundings. On one occasion we had the opportunity to participate in a box lunch on the way to the United States Naval Academy. At the Academy, we had the pleasure of hearing a wonderful concert on an organ that had recently been renovated. Each day was similar in attendance and design: concert in the a.m., workshops in the afternoon and an evening concert of some kind. It was reported that 1,212 AGO members attended the National Convention. We received admonishment from the President of the National AGO group that we are responsible to make every person who is interested in playing an organ, as a profession or for recreation, feel welcome to join the AGO. We should be looking for and getting our college students that have an interest in the organ to join us. We are to talk with other church organists who are not members and get them involved in the organization. OUR FIRST MEETING-MONDAY SEPTEMBER 20, 2010 Our first meeting will be on Monday September 20th at Louisville Christ United Methodist Church. We will meet for dinner at 5:30 p.m. at Mike’s-Milan’s on the West edge of Louisville. At 7:30 p.m., Mark Thewes will present our program on the new Allen Q390 organ which has 80 stops, and has 3 manuals with 7 voicing lists. David Royer will be our host.** Please email or phone Nancymae if coming for dinner.**We will sit around the table and talk until time for the fantastic program. Christ United Methodist Church is at 600 E. Gorgas St., Louisville. Coming East on R62 turn right (South) on R44, go to 4th stop light (Gorgas ST.), turn left (East). The church is in the 3rd block and sits almost on the street. Park in the lot on the East side of the church. Mike’s-Milan’s Restaurant is on the corner of California Ave. and StR 153. Coming East on R62, turn right on California Ave. (dead ends) at R153. Milan’s is on the right. You will come East on R153 (12th St. (Mahoning Rd) out of Canton) after coming into Louisville. Mike’s Milan is on the left at California Ave. From there continue East on R153. After crossing the railroad tracks turn right onto Gorgas St. and follow to the Church on the right. Installation of 2010-2011 officers will be held with Kevin Kutz, immediate past dean. A Note From Mark Thewes: At the invitation of David Royer, and the approval of the Program Committee, I am very honored to be asked to give the first public performance/demonstration on the new 3 manual Allen organ just installed at Christ UMC, Louisville. This instrument is the newest generation of Allen Organ with seven complete stoplists contained in the instrument. They are: Allen Classic, Aeolian-Skinner, English Cathedral, Cavaille-Coll, Arp Schgnitger, Schlicker and Orchestral. Through traditional organ literature and some hymn based settings and transcriptions I will demonstrate each of these types of organs. For instance, on the English Cathedral organ I will show the Full Swell, Tuba, and grand sound of the full organ using pieces from that period and then continuing on to the other “organs” in the same manner. Complete stoplists on all seven organs will be handed out as well as the complete list of pieces performed. This should be a most interesting first meeting! I will look forward to seeing you there. Some follow-up information from Kevin Kutz…..Hal Davenport was a Canton Chapter AGO member for many years. Hal passed away on May3rd and information in his obituary suggested in lieu of flowers, contributions in Hal’s memory may be made to the Canton Chapter AGO. A few contributions had been received in May as reported in the May newsletter. Since then, we received a few more contributions and I wanted to update everyone on how things ended up. As of mid June, we received a total of five contributions with a total of $150. A thank you note was sent to each of these generous folks with a statement that the funds would be placed in our scholarship fund to benefit an organ student at some point in time in the future. I also sent the information to Hal’s wife Nancy, so she would be aware of the contributions and intended use. Sympathy…We offer our sympathy to member Lark Stoehr. His father, Robert H. Stoehr, passed away on July 24th. Lark has been a member since 1974.
