Message from the Dean

DEAN'S MESSAGE MESSAGE - NATIONAL CONVENTION

Have you already started thinking about your vacation destination next summer? I would like to encourage you to consider Washington D.C. next July, for the AGO National Convention. Registration has already begun and the early bird deadline is February 14, 2010. The steering committee for this convention is trying to keep costs down for those of you who are watching your budgets and whose churches are, also. The early bird registration is only $5 more than the 2002 convention. Members pay $340, seniors pay $300 and students pay $200. This cost covers a wide variety of opportunities to learn and enjoy the art of being an organist. Some of these opportunities include admission costs to many concerts including three concerts at the Washington National Cathedral. You will have the opportunity to attend classes covering a wide variety of subjects. One class is led by our very own Daniel Fortune, who is leading a class on using computers effectively. You can attend worship services and simply spend time with others who love the organ. The hotel accommodations are offered at 50% off the normal rate and will be offered 3 days before and after the convention for you and your family to do extra site seeing. Dan, Zach and I hope to see you there. Have a happy holiday season!

REVIEWS: THREE AGO PROGRAMS

OLIVIER LATRY CONCERT

Olivier Latry presented one of the finest recitals ever heard in Akron on Friday evening, October 9, at Trinity Lutheran Church, before a packed house. The program featured a variety of dance music, transcriptions and improvisations - and was played entirely from memory. Latry was at home at the Berghaus console after only a few hours of practice. He was truly amazing! A big thank you goes out to the AGO Executive Board, who provided so many cookies for the reception after the concert; and to Janice Kobb and JoAnne Zurell who did a fine job of coordinating everything. It was truly an amazing concert and evening enjoyed by all.

STAN HYWET PRESENTATION

Barbara MacGregor presented a wonderful narration with slides about Residence Organs of the Rich and Famous - Organs of the Early 20th Century in the Stan Hywet music room. She concluded her informative talk by playing three typical organ selections of the period, on the newly restored Aeolian Organ. The program was well-attended and everyone learned lots about a facet of pipe organ history unfamiliar to most of us. Thanks Barbara!

ALL SAINTS’ DAY HYMN FESTIVAL

Dr. Busarow presented a marvelous All Saints’ Day worship experience, assisted by a large choir, vocal and instrumental soloists, the Trinity Brass, readers, a narrator and Pastor Robert Tauscher. In the words of those who attended, the music was spectacular, magnificent and tremendous. Some didn’t want the program to end. Others reported that singing the hymns and listening to the readings was a very emotional experience. The program was attended by nearly 400, followed by a marvelous refreshment hour after the concert, provided by the church members of Fairlawn Lutheran Church. Thanks to everyone who organized, publicized, participated and attended the concert!

“WITH HEART AND VOICE”

HOST - RICHARD GLADWELL - DIES

Host of With Heart and Voice dies at 88

Richard Gladwell, the syndicated church music host and Episcopalian, has died in Rochester, NY at 88 of cancer. British-born, with an Anglican background, he hosted an hour-long sacred music program, With Heart and Voice, for 30 years in over 100 radio markets from public station WXXI-FM Rochester.

In March 2009 he received the Benemerenti medal from Benedict XVI during a special concert in his honor at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Rochester. The medal is one of the Vatican’s highest honors to the laity.

Richard Gladwell passed away on Thursday morning, October 15 at 10:25. He was with his wife, granddaughter, and a dear friend, and died quietly and peacefully.

Richard was diagnosed with brain cancer in June. After surgery, he was able to spend time with his extended family, including several weeks at a lake house in upstate New York. Throughout his illness he was surrounded by family and friends in his beautiful sunroom looking out on his beloved garden.

WXXI will broadcast a special tribute to With Heart and Voice host, Richard Gladwell. Co-hosted by Jeanne Fisher and Peter DuBois, the program will include portions of interviews that Richard recorded over the years, and will feature some of his favorite music. Selections include Sir Hubert Parry’s I Was Glad, How Lovely is Thy Dwelling Place from the Brahms Requiem, Steal Away as sung by Jesse Norman, John Rutter’s Requiem and hymns by Stanford and Vaughan Williams.
