YES! It’s nearly time for Pipes on the Plains…but Wichita AGO has been continuously active with many projects and programs this year! Most recently: · Chapter RCYO/Quimby Competition winner, Rachel Matthews, student of Anna Jeter will be competing at the Pipes on the Plains RCYO/Quimby Competition. · Pops for Kids’ Young People’s Organ Concert featuring Lynne Davis was an April success. · May 17th Chapter Scholarship Auditions will give promising piano students the opportunity for a summer of organ study. · June 2nd 6:30 pm Chapter Potluck Dinner at Irene & Ken Shaw’s home - 316 Cardinal Lane (please note that the bridge is out at 143rd St near Central—it is easiest to drive north from Kellogg & 143rd St). Bring your Favorite dish to share, catch up on the latest AGO & convention news and enjoy the company of your AGO friends. · Please read the information in this newsletter and at www.pipesontheplains09.org. · Everyone in AGO is an important member to us all. *** POPs FOR KIDS ***Group Demonstrations are given by qualified organists at local churches and at WSU. Wichita has the two largest pipe organs in Kansas, nearly 65 pipe organs in all. Available to schools, clubs, and youth groups. Contact person: Irene Shaw (316) 733-0323 Children's Concerts are scheduled annually. Lynne Davis, associate organ professor at WSU, presented her first Children's Concert in 2008. It was so well received that another is scheduled. Mark your calendar now! RESERVATIONS: CALL WSU FINE ARTS BOX OFFICE (316) 978-3233 2008-2009 has been designated as the International Year of the Organ. Watch for special programs on radio, television and in local churches. Basic Teaching Unit: Exploring the Pipe Organ, King of Instruments. Information packet includes basic facts, brief history of the pipe organ in story form, vocabulary list, stories, "How it Works" drawings, activity sheets. VIDEOTAPES OR DVDs: Organ Crawl. Have you ever experienced an organ crawl? Few people have! This video was made inside the organ chamber, showing parts of the organ seldom seen. Filmed at Church of the Magdalen in 1992, it is now a historic treasure. Irene Shaw, Narrator. Carole Pracht and Shirley Wiebe, Organists. Casavant Organ. Time: 10 minutes. Scenes of Children features John Leavitt, the composer, at the children's Premier Concert, May 10, 1993. Marcussen Organ, Wiedemann Hall, WSU. Inspired by selections from "A Child's Garden of Verses" by Robert Louis Stevenson, these program pieces hold appeal for children of all ages! The work was commissioned by Wichita Chapter, AGO, to commemorate its Fortieth Anniversary. Time: 12 minutes.
