Salisbury Chapter

Last updated: June 14, 2009

Message from the Dean

Greetings from the Salisbury chapter. As the only chapter on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, our membership includes musicians from a large geographic area. We meet for dinner and programs five times per year, and also sponsor many special projects including members’ recitals, organ restorations, youth choral festivals and hurricane relief.

Although we are a small chapter, we were recognized nationally for the largest increase in membership in our category in 2005-2006. This is a great place to live, work and make music! Join us, or let us know when you can visit.

Greetings to all Region III AGO members.

First, thank you to all those who have already registered for the 2009 Region III Convention and booked rooms at our convention hotel, the elegant Norfolk Waterside Marriott.  We look forward to seeing you in July, and you may now stop reading this message.

For those of you who are intending to register but did not get around to it yet be cause of minor details like playing for Holy Week services and filing your taxes, let us congratulate you on having both of those challenges in the rear-view mirror.  Now it is time to look forward to the convention.  Registration cut-off is on June 15th, just about two months away.  We need the time between June 15th and July 5th to make our final preparations with the most accurate registration information, so June 15th is a deadline you need to take very seriously.

The most important information to bring to your urgent attention is that our room block of hotel rooms available at the amazing convention rate of $119/night plus tax is now 60% booked, thanks to excellent early registrations.  You do not want to miss the opportunity to stay in this lovely hotel, right down by Norfolk's Waterside Drive, at such a fantastic rate.  To avoid disappointment, as they say, book now!

And if you are going to book your hotel, you should also register for the convention, since those same early registrants have been filling up the spaces in several options.  The banquet tickets are in high demand, for example.  And if you want t o register for any of our music reading sessions, you really should go straight from this e-mail to the convention website and get to work locking in your choices by registering immediately.  The reading sessions are outstandingly popular.

The website is www.hitthestops.org and you can do it all online, or print off a registration form and mail it in.

Finally, if you have not yet thought about attending, avoid being left out and think about it now.  We are anticipating a truly memorable convention.  You do not want to be left thinking, "If only I had decided to Hit the Stops in Hampton Roads..."

Best wishes to all,
John Dixon and Martin Sunderland
Convention co-chairs

Dear AGO Region III Chapter Deans, Sub-Deans, and Newsletter Editors,

If you haven’t taken note of the outstanding roster of artists, presenters, workshops and worship opportunities to be offered by the Hampton Roads (Tidewater Chapter) Region III Convention, pull out the most recent TAO (Feb issue, p. 44) and check them out. When you look at the TAO regional conventions ad, you'll see that the Region III Convention has more to offer than all the other conventions and for less money. There is a vast array of talent and a variety that any region would be proud to offer.

"Hit the Stops in Hampton Roads" has been on top of things from its beginning. When the nine 2009 regional conventions sent their programs and budgets to the AGO Committee on Regional Conventions for approval, only one convention was approved unanimously and unconditionally, with plaudits for the program and bravos for the budget, and that one was our Region III 2009 Convention!

There are two ways that individual chapters can be supportive of this creative endeavor. First, let’s participate by advertising! Region III chapters are being given a 15% courtesy discount on the ad rates. Each chapter should assess their finances, then place an appropriate ad in the convention book. (Two or more chapters might want to place an ad together.) Any contribution, no matter how large or small, is helpful and appreciated. The size of the ad is unimportant compared to the collegial recognition and support that these ads offer.

For convention program book advertising information, go to www.hitthestops.org and click Ad/sExhibits. Remember to reduce your chapter's ad rate by 15%. Personal cards (3 3/4" x 1 1/2") are available for $75 (which is $64 after the courtesy discount). (Thanks to those chapters and individuals who have already placed ads in the program book!)

Second, let’s support our convention by encouraging your chapter members to attend! Regional conventions are wonderful opportunities, not only to better ourselves in our work, but also to reconnect with those in our region and profession who are near and dear to us. Region III has hosted extraordinary regional conventions in the past, and this one will also be refreshing, renewing and rewarding. Go to www.hitthestops.org for convention information. The registration form is on-line to be copied and mailed now. On-line registration will be available through the web site soon.

Co-Coordinators John Dixon and Martin Sunderland and the Tidewater Chapter Steering Committee have been hard at work almost three years planning and organizing this exceptional convention for us. "Hit the Stops in Hampton Roads" is a gathering of the Region, by the Region, for the Region. It's ours and it's great! Let's "Hit the Stops in Hampton Roads!" I look forward to being with you there!

Thank you for your continued good work for the Guild, and thank you for helping to make our Region III Convention possible through your support.
