| SUMMER PIPE ORGAN ENCOUNTER 2009
See link to Education Reprtoire Requirements below under Links: San Diego Chapter is hosting a POE (Pipe Organ Encounter) for ages 13-18 on August 2 to 8, 2009. This is a great opportunity to introduce a young person to the organ. Details will available on the National AGO website soon. An Adult POE schedule will also be posted. At our first Palomar Chapter event on September 28, two or three of our 2008 POE participants will tell about their experiences. There is a video one can view online. Now is a good time to identify and start preparing a young person or adult for our chapter scholarship auditions to held in April 2009. Repertoire lists may be found at http://www.agosd.org/education.htm. An applicant may audition the first time on piano. If you know a teacher of piano who you think might have interested students, contact Carol Graham at 760-224-1123, and she will send the information. Young people who are in church are the most likely ones to be interested. The scholarship may be used for POE or for lessons with an AGO teacher. Submitted by Carol Graham, Education/Scholarship Chairman. Palomar Chapter AGO Scholarship Auditions 2007 Rules and Policies Audition Date: Sunday Afternoon, April 26, 2009 1. Organists will play two pieces in contrasting styles and a hymn. The maximum performance time is 15 minutes. It is not necessary to use the entire 15 minutes! Please prepare to play an introduction and two stanzas of the hymn, as for congregational singing. Please note the requirements for the hymn at each level. The two pieces for students entered at Level 4 and above must be from two different periods. Please refer to the Progressive Repertoire Requirements for details http://www.agosd.org/education.htm. Literature in the repertoire requirements is intended to serve as a guide to entering a student at the appropriate level. It is not necessary to play a piece that is listed. 2. Pianists may be of any age and will play one or two pieces. The maximum performance time is 5 minutes. Pianists would most often be auditioning for introductory organ lessons with a qualified AGO instructor. If a pianist wishes to attend a POE, indicate this on the application form and the judges will decide if the student is ready to benefit from an organ camp. Pianists may only receive an award once for participation on piano. To be eligible for an award in the second year, participation in the second year must be on the organ. 3. Please be sure names are on all music and that measures are numbered. If there is difficulty in providing copies for the adjudicator, please mark “extra copy needed” on the application. Xerox copies may not be used without written permission from the publisher. 4. Adjudicator’s comments will be mailed to teachers. All students will receive a Certificate of Participation. 5. The auditions will be held at United Methodist Church of Vista, 490 S. Melrose Dr., Vista 92081. You will receive information via email about scheduling a maximum of 2 hr organ rehearsal time at the church once we have received your application and entry fee. Please DO NOT call the church about practice time. Carol Graham is the Scholarship Committee’s practice time coordinator. You may reach her by phone at 760.224.1123 or by Email: earlygram@earthlink.net Teachers are welcome to work with their students on the organ. 5. You may duplicate the Rules and Policies 2009 and the application form for your students. 6. Performers 21 years or older may participate in the auditions a maximum of three times. 7. Participants will perform for each other in groups. This will mean a time commitment of approximately 1 hour. This is intended to give students an opportunity to hear other performers and other literature. 8. Participants must be residents of North San Diego County. 9. Applications must be received by April 1, 2009. 10. Students may designate funds for a Pipe Organ Encounter only once. Information about POE may be found at http://www.agohq.org/education/poe.html. POE+(adults) information agohq.org/education/indexpoeplus.html Subsequent awards may be used for private lessons or another organ camp. There will be a Pipe Organ Encounter in San Diego Aug 2-8, 2009. POE applications have information about scholarship money offered through the national organization. 11. Tuition checks for students who receive awards will be mailed directly to the teacher, POE site or other organ camp of the student’s choice within two weeks of the audition date. Students who wish to attend POE are encouraged to reserve a space as soon as possible. 12. The judges will select those students whose performances they considered the best to perform in June at the Palomar Chapter Meeting. Students may enter at the same level as many times as desired, but will only be eligible for an award twice at the same level. 13. If you have questions, please contact Carol Graham at 760.224.1123 or earlygram@earthlink.net. Our goal is to create an event that will be positive for all who participate. Please call if you have any questions. Together we will continue to encourage organ study. Thank you in advance for your participation.
