Message from the Dean

I am most pleased to be able to share with you the plans for our Chapter's programming year 2009-2010. A succinct listing of these programs can be found on page two in this Newsletter and I offer here a few more details about each of them.
I am so excited to be able to host our opening September meeting at Sacred Heart Cathedral. Our tiny Reuter organ will be quite suitable to our topic "Recovering the Classics." I have a long list of easy service music from across the ages to contribute and Sub-Dean Jeff Hammack is an ardent supporter of our efforts to present a balanced repertoire for our churches. You will want to bring your own gems to this workshop as well and to present them during the "open console" portion of this program. We will then adjourn to the Cathedral music room for a brief installation of officers and light refreshments, a wonderful and informal time to share the ups and downs of our profession and to offer support and encouragement to our colleagues.
Our October meeting will be held on the fine new Richards, Fowkes & Co. organ at First Presbyterian Church, Rocky Mount and will introduce us to the intriguing work of Dutch organist Sietze de Vries. De Vries holds the performance diploma from the Royal Conservatory in The Hague and is very active as a concert organist in the Netherlands and abroad, with concert tours and master classes that have taken him to Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Denmark, England, and the United States. He has won fifteen different prizes in various national organ competitions in both repertoire and improvisation.
The November meeting is our annual members' recital held this year on the three-manual Schantz organ at White Memorial Presbyterian Church. With no particular "theme" for this year's recital, you are free to imagine endless possibilities for this event!
The month of January brings us to our bi-annual "Pedals, Pipes and Pizza" program introducing young musicians to the organ and its music. Our venue is Hayes Barton Baptist Church. Please begin to spread the word to your piano students about this opportunity. We had over 50 participants for this two years ago and we will definitely hope to exceed that number this coming year!
Peter Conte, Grand Court Organist of the mammoth Wanamaker Department Store organ, Philadelphia, Pa., will showcase the mammoth Edenton Street UMC Letourneau organ in a spectacular way with a recital in February. Hearing Conte play the Grand Court Organ is indeed a magical experience and I'm sure that this concert will not disappoint.
We will wrap up the season with a workshop on anthem accompaniment and console conducting by Dr. John Cummins of St. Paul Episcopal Church, Winston-Salem, to be held on the fine symphonic Austin organ at First Baptist Church, downtown Raleigh. Cummins holds the DMA degree from the Eastman School of Music and has served as organist/choirmaster of Christ Church Cathedral, Lexington, Ky., and as music director of the First Plymouth Congregational Church UCC in Lincoln, Neb. He has been a featured performer at national conventions of the Organ Historical Society and was the director of the Masterworks Chorale for the Louisville, Ky., Orchestra.
Thank you to everyone who contributed ideas for these programs and who have graciously volunteered to host our programs. I look forward to seeing all of you this fall!
Tom
